Quick question! Have you ever had one of your comments taken the wrong way, and you wind up feeling hurt and upset because your opinion has been criticized by other bloggers? How do you handle it?
I read too fast. I misunderstood the situation. Well if you know the other bloggers you might try to explain yourself. Or you could try to leave another comment explaining yourself...or just... chalk it up as a difference of opinion and don't let it bother you.
Well, I think I try to chalk it up to the fact we're not face-to-face, and can't hear vocal inflections and see facial expressions. That is my first line of defense.
Also, we do not have a very full picture of each other's personality and background and context we're coming from, so the situation is ripe for some misunderstandings, and I try to give people leeway.
If all else fails, I figure it is the other person's problem, not mine. Sometimes people bring their own issues and problems to the net, and project them onto people there, trying to get power or resolution they haven't yet achieved in real life.
I try to remember that what I write in a little comment box is very different than having someone who knows me standing in front of me seeing my face and reading my true expressions.
I always try to come back one more time and explain my original comment but after that...que sara, sara. Those who know me, know me. Those who don't are going to be at a disadvantage because they'll never know my true heart on a subject. I make amends and then I walk away...
MRs. D: I did exactly that - I went over and tried to explain my viewpoint. Then, I did what you suggested - just chalked it up as a difference of opinion. Thanks for your input!
Julana - Well said. I think you have written very wise words.
Jules: I really have to keep that in mind, because these other people don't know me or my current situation at all. If they did, they would have understood my remarks. They didn't know my "true heart" - so, like you said, what will be, will be. I just more or less decided to not leave comments over there anymore, and I'm even debating about whether or not to even read the blog anymore. Thanks for your support!
Hasn't really happened in blogging, but in a forum. Someone actuall left it because of a comment I made. It was actually kind of surreal and in the end, after a couple of emails and an email sent by a neutral party, I decided I must have struck a nerve somewhere.
I think we're responsible for our words and should make every effort to reconcile, but it isn't always our issue that is causing the misunderstanding. Sometimes simple disagreement is meant as a personal attack, no matter how carefully you word it.
I have two college age daughters and a precious granddaughter and a husband with whom I have shared my life for 35 years! I am a pscyotherapist in private practice where I counsel individuals, couples, and families.

I'm hurt and offended. ;)
probably, i don't remember anything specific though... I would simply try to make it right..... apologize for any hurts, and fix the misunderstanding.

You want to know how I handled something, or how you ought to?
Stacy - Hah!

Hi Dana - thank you so much for your thoughts, I found what you said very interesting. I agree with you totally.
Kevin - "Mild mannered and retiring?" Yeah, right, whatever. :-)
I console myself with the knowledge that I'm a superior being...
